The Sega Model 2 arcade hardware came in 4 variations over the years it was offered: “Model 2”, “Model 2 A-CRX”, “Model 2 B-CRX” and “Model 2 C-CRX”. While they do share an architecture most of the major components are not cross compatible and that includes the game releases and the ROM boards that the game ROMs install onto.
Across all of these variations 4 Games also included security in the forum of a “protection board” that accompanied the ROM board: “Dead or Alive”, “Dynamite Cop” (aka Dynamite Deka 2), “Pilot Kids”, “Zero Gunner”. With that said games within the same hardware variant can be converted to another game with a simple ROM swap; those that use a security board also need the appropriate security board installed as well (unless the security has been patched out of the game code).
The one tricky aspect of conversions is Jumper configuration. The ROM boards on this hardware have a lot of Jumpers and they must be configured properly for the game for a ROM swap to be successful. Sega released official ROM swap kit and these often came with a document outlining the appropriate position of each ROM and Jumper configuration for the kit.
Poring through pictures and my own PCB collection I’ve been compiling Jumper configurations for each game, and many in the community have helped contribute. You can find this document here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1X0yhBgxWGy56PX7o1nM0SoOtj4pfSgu5r3gYe_EGfTU/edit?usp=sharing
To accompany this I’ve recently put together a ROM and Jumper map of the 4 different ROM board variants to help out.
Hopefully others find this useful. If you’ve got other Jumper Configurations missing from my doc or you find any errors in these maps please let me know.
